How do I send a parcel by courier?

At Impact Express, we’ve years of experience delivering parcels across the world. Not sure what to expect or how the process works? We’re here to give you some expert advice.

Do some research

Every country will have strict import and export rules, including a list of items prohibited from entering the country. Check that the item or items you wish to send do not feature on a prohibited goods list. You may find that your local consulate or embassy website lists this information.

Most couriers will also have their own list of prohibited items, so make sure to have a look at that too.

It’s important to note that many couriers will not ship goods classified as ‘dangerous’. At Impact Express, we specialise in shipping dangerous goods. Our staff are fully trained to handle dangerous items and our shipping services fully comply with IATA regulations. We can help you ship goods such as dry ice and lithium batteries, which other delivery companies may refuse.

Package your parcel

Once you’ve confirmed that your item can be sent, it’s time to prepare your parcel for dispatch. For most shipments, you’ll need:

  • a cardboard box (of appropriate size)
  • parcel tape
  • protective materials
  • a marker pen
  • access to a printer

Bear in mind that your parcel will have to pass through an automated sorting hub, where it will join thousands of other parcels. The packages will travel along a conveyor belt, so adding warning labels displaying the words ‘fragile’ or ‘handle with care’ will do little to protect your item.

In order to ensure your item arrives safely, take extra care while wrapping your parcel. Pack your item securely, adding plenty of padding and shock-absorbent materials to protect from excess movement or violent impacts.

For a detailed explanation of how to securely package a parcel, follow our simple packaging guide.

Weigh and measure your parcel

To book a courier service, the delivery company will require the weight and dimensions of your parcel. Using scales and a measuring tape, record the relevant numbers and then enter this information into the online booking form. Make sure you’re accurate to avoid extra charges along the way.

Carry out an online price comparison

Your package’s size and weight measurements can be used to compare shipping costs across a range of courier sites. Most will have an instant quote generator, which requires basic information about your shipment, including its intended destination.

Choose your courier

Once you’ve compared costs, you’ll need to select a delivery service which suits your needs. If you have a time-sensitive shipment, you’ll probably want express delivery or use an overnight courier service if you are shipping within the UK. If you’re shipping your parcel internationally, pick a courier who can demonstrate appropriate knowledge and expertise.

Courier services will also offer varied collection and drop-off options. Most of the time you’ll be requested to take your parcel to a drop-off point or arrange for it to be collected from your home or work address.

If you are shipping internationally, you will be required to fill out a customs invoice. This can usually be completed online. You’ll be asked for a description of the contents of your parcel along with an estimate of its value, so that the correct duties and taxes can be applied when customs inspect your parcel at the border.

Print your shipping label

After booking your shipment, you will be sent a print-at-home label. You will need access to a printer in order to attach the label to your parcel.

Once you’ve printed your label, attach it to the outside of the box. Use strong parcel tape, placing the label in a visible position. It’s always wise to tuck a secondary label into your parcel (and also a return address) just in case the shipping label becomes dislodged in transit.

Hand your parcel to the courier

Depending on which dispatch option you chose, you’ll either take your parcel to a drop-off point or your courier will come and collect your parcel for you.
